Colonel William David Rees V.D. Colonel 3rd Glamorgan Rifle Volunteers, 6th Bn Welsh Regiment & Royal Engineers.

We have been privileged to acquire the WW1 uniform trunk of Colonel William David Rees VD. Items from the trunk are listed below.
Colonel William David Rees VD, a native of Swansea, military career began when he was commissioned into the 3rd Glamorgan Rifle Volunteers in May 1881. He was appointed to the rank of Captain 1885 and Major ten years later in 1895 and in 1901 he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, being awarded the Volunteer Decoration. On the 5th February 1904 he was promoted to Colonel commanding of the Regiment and on the reorganisation of the Territorial Force in 1908 he had the privilege of becoming the first Commanding Officer of the newly formed 6th Bn Welsh Regiment . A position he held until his retirement in 1911. An engineer by trade, he was a Senior Partner in Rees Winship & Co Engineers and contractors based in Swansea. At the outbreak of the Great War he applied to the War Office for a commission, which was turned down due to his age, however he was appointed to the Committee which raised and equipped the Swansea Battalion. Following a meeting with Lord Kitchener, who pulled strings, he was offered a commission in 1915 as a Colonel in the Royal Engineers, within weeks he had received orders for France and was put in overall command of ten units of the Royal Engineers, garrisoned close to the front line for the purpose of construction work. He was later transferred to a UK establishment due to his health and continued to serve in the London area. Living with his family, the Kaiser appeared to have one more go at him when during a German air raid his house was hit by bombs. He survived the war and resigned his commission and died in 1921 at the age of 65.
